The finish our customers ask for most

Skimming is the application of a thin topcoat of finishing plaster to walls or ceilings. It’s one of the most common plastering requests we handle — and for good reason. A properly applied skim coat turns uneven, worn or patched surfaces into a smooth, flat finish that’s ready to paint or paper once fully dry.

Over time, older properties develop uneven surfaces, wallpaper scars and minor cracks. Rather than removing plaster back to brickwork, a re-skim is often the cleanest way to refresh a room during redecoration or renovation.

    What skimming includes

    01

    Re-skimming over sound plaster

A fresh skim coat over existing, prepared plaster to smooth out wear, unevenness and minor imperfections.

    02

    Skimming new plasterboard

Finishing freshly boarded walls and ceilings with a smooth skim coat ready to decorate.

    03

    Ceiling skimming

Refreshing tired or textured ceilings with a smooth skim finish where the surface allows.

    04

    Post-repair finishing

Skimming over chased channels, patches and repaired areas so the repair blends with the surrounding wall.

    When re-skimming makes sense

A re-skim is usually the right call when the existing plaster is broadly sound but the surface has become tired, uneven or scarred. We assess each surface first — where the base is solid, a skim coat is faster and less disruptive than removing plaster back to brickwork.

Proper preparation is what makes a skim last. We assess the surface, apply a suitable bonding primer where required, scrape back loose material, and trowel the finish coat to a high standard — keeping the working area clean and protecting your floors and furnishings throughout.
